I forgot about December
It’s the one-way winter door
Why would I want to remember
What winter has in store
Each year around this time it seems
I wonder why we live here at all
The snow, the ice and the dark and the cold
Why can’t spring just follow fall

Summer is jumping rope
Autumn’s getting ready

In summer, too, when I work outside

In fall the party’s over
And we’re busy cleaning up
What with pumpkins, leaves and squash and chard
It’s done and it’s enough
But wintertime is not like that
I go inside for relief
Where I mess my assumptions
And sort out my beliefs

Amid the sound of falling snow

Of the wild and bitter cold
It takes me past the darkened edge
Of what I think I know
Where I learn that I should still hang on
Instead of letting go
Spring is starting over
Summer is nice and slow
Autumn’s scurrying ‘round
You know winter might be hope

In wintertime it is close to me
The cold air presses down
And the snow reflects the starlight
So in darkness light is found
