“…a beautifully rare blend of poetry, stream of conscious thought, and comic surprise. This kind of slow pour of storytelling makes you want to listen forever. Masterful and deeply human."

Bio (400 words)
Mark Wonneck was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, but now lives on Vancouver Island. On his own or in the folk duo The Douglas Brothers, he has been performing off and on in folk festivals and clubs, and house concerts since the mid-1980s.
Mark’s songs have been described in a lot of different ways…authentic, warm, quirky, imaginative, funny, poetic, poignant, honest, whimsical and relatable. “…a beautifully rare blend of poetry, stream of conscious thought, and comic surprise. This kind of slow pour of storytelling makes you want to listen forever. Masterful and deeply human" (L. Schuerbeke, Concert Host, Parksville BC); "A wonderfully quirky, slice-of-life songwriter..." (D. Cox, Artistic Director, Vancouver Island MusicFest, Courtenay, BC). "Honestly, he’s unique and the closest thing we have to a musical Stuart Mclean. His brilliant songs will crack a smile as easily as a tear…sometimes during the same song." (M. Sherlock, Oceanside Folk/Roots Club, Qualicum Beach, BC).
Mark writes songs that are compelling and often more than what they appear to be. A lot of them are in story form, sometimes slowly emerging and other times twisting and turning in surprising ways. Mark says, “songwriting is a way for me to sort out things in my mind, and it’s kind of cluttered up there.” “The term "singer songwriter" just doesn't fit. Story singer, consummate guitarist. Warm, authentic, thoughtful, joyous. Expect the unexpected” (S. Methot, Ladysmith, BC); "Mark’s performance is laugh-out-loud entertaining. His creative wit keeps you engaged and singing along while simultaneously moving you deeply. Not only does he perform original songs with uncharacteristic insight into our world—with all its foibles and beauty—but he also serves up the unexpected” (S. Cowan Copy, Parksville, BC). “With [Mark's] music, I am beginning to realize that I want to meter out the songs and not rush through them. One song can last for a few days before I am tempted to open the next gift.” (D. Ruzicka, Camrose, AB).
Mark has three solo albums (Storylines, Following Some Birds, and Remnant Wonders) and is in the process of “recording enough other songs to fill a small bathtub.” The albums can be downloaded at https://markwonneckmusic.com/music.
