Lyrics

Even In This Rain

At some point you realize
We’re all in this together,
Same air, same water
Same nasty weather.
It’s the same sale at Walmart,
The same “do they love me” predicament,
The same plea for justice,
Though our chances are different.

Still we end up fighting
Over all wrong things,
What is true and who has more pain,
It’s like a rain that blurs everything.
It’s a carnival game
And we’re locked in;
We will play and
The house will win.

Ask if there’s a better way
Ask it again and again and again and again
If its made it can be unmade
Even in this rain
Even in this rain

You can’t see that hungry merchant,
But he’s got your attention.
He clears his throat
As an act of redemption
And offers what amounts to
Full blown obsession,
The price of which he forgot
To mention.

The soldiers are laughing
With their hands on their guns.
Everything is great until
Somebody runs.
Grandpa’s been coughing
All night long.
They’ll convince you to turn up the music
So it sounds like he’s singing along.

Ask if there’s a better way
Ask it again and again and again and again
If its made it can be unmade
Even in this rain
Even in this rain

There’s nothing anyone’s done
That they’ve done on their own.
Our lives are built from
Kindness and bones.
But you can’t buy kindness
At the corner store;
Geez, you can’t buy much there
Anymore.

Ask if there’s a better way
Ask it again and again and again and again
If its made it can be unmade
Even in this rain
Even in this rain
