Lyrics

Mending a Heartbreak

Captains and jailers
All gather round.
Turn in your keys
We’re taking her down.
The rats have been chewing
I see all the signs.
The teetering homeless are all
Waiting in line.

I laundered the decorations,
All the colours bled.
There’s drinks and confusion
On offer instead.
The party’s half over,
Or that’s my guess,
And something has shifted,
I can tell from the mess.

I’m mending a heartbreak,
But it’s going slow.
The thread’s made of memories
That never can grow.
I’m mending a heartbreak,
Or I’m learning how.
I should’ve saved all the pieces
I realize now.

The TV’s all fuzzy.
The news speaks in tongues
About getting more,
About getting done.
But I watch the willow
With her feet in the muck;
A life that’s worth living
On sunshine and luck.

You said that you loved me
And then said goodbye.
You might have said more
But I turned inside.
When finally I looked to you,
You were gone.
It all changed in a moment
That’s lasted so long.

I’m mending a heartbreak,
But it's going slow.
The thread’s made of memories
That never can grow.
I’m mending a heartbreak,
Or I’m learning how.
I should’ve saved all the pieces
I realize now.

There was all that was told me
And all left unsaid,
And somewhere between
Was what it all meant.
And how much I loved you,
I should have known all along,
Is how much it hurts
Now that you’re gone.

I’m mending a heartbreak,
But it’s going slow.
The thread’s made of memories
That never can grow.
I’m mending a heartbreak,
Or I’m learning how.
I should’ve saved all the pieces
I realize now.
